“If you cannot hear the sound of the genuine in you, you will all of your life spend your days on the strings that somebody else pulls”- Howard Thurman
Lately, I have found myself in thoughts about life, its meaning, how I want to live it and how I want to be remembered (occupational hazard). The focus of some of my reveries are mostly on the said “need” to belong! We as human beings are constantly pervaded with the strong desire to be part of something, naturally. This is perfectly alright, except when the focus of this desire is a subject that is highly questionable or one that leads to a negative change in our character.
A desire to belong so strong that we could lose ourselves, an epic disaster if this “self” is simply wonderful. We lose the “genuine” self, the beautiful thing that makes us special and unique when we try to be like everyone else or try too hard to fit in.
I have learned that taking control of your life is discovering and getting to know oneself. Being in love with who you are while striving to be a better version of yourself. Mostly, never losing sight of that, even when others don’t value it. Be genuine, be kind. Life’s too short to be anything but yourself.
